Response to “The Veldt”
My reaction to “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury is wow, I can’t believe ten year old kids
would do something of this magnitude to their parents, let alone even imagining to try to kill
their parents in the brutal manner that they did. Apparently I was surprised that if the kids
imagine wild Africa, the nursery room grants it for them and real live lions are shown eating
something with an African jungle and hot sun. At first I thought the Lions were fake just like the
parents did, but I had a feeling it would be real when they kept on referring to the lions looking
too real there when they were after them the first time. This futuristic house seems more of a
reality in today’s modern world because of the 4-D technology that is advancing but still the part
of the imagination that makes the technology bring a lion to life is too imaginary to ever be real
in my opinion.
Also, I think the parents made a mistake letting the kids having access to the Nursery for
a few minutes because since they were suddenly locking down the house for good, the kids were
caught by surprise and didn’t have any other plan to hurt the parents. But by getting them with a
little time in the nursery due to them begging their parents to give them a few moments, they got
their chance to go to their original plan to call their parents down, disappear from the Nursery,
and lock the door from the outside when the parents look for them in the Nursery. I was very
surprised and shocked by the fact that the children showed that much anger to the parents that
they imagined something like wild Africa and to imagine a lion among all animals to be the final
piece to killing their parents once and for all, brutally eating them.
I didn’t think the kids would be that mad at their parents since the parents got them the
Nursery and the house in the first place, but apparently I thought wrong because the kids were so
engrossed in the Nursery that they forgot their parents bought this expensive place in the first
place and actually killed them with their imagination, straight out of a horror movie just because
they were going to take it away for their own benefit to learn themselves. I think finally that as
technology is advancing today, schools and organizations should always teach the old and
practical way of doing things in life like tying shoe laces or learning how to draw themselves
instead of a computer because if one day something goes wrong with a computer because it isn’t
perfect, it’s man made. Then the students and all the people will have the skills to do these things
to survive without any type of modern technology.
